He puts this monolingual reader to shame. (In my last post, I introduced the strange--strange, to me anyway--use of the phrase "clerical persons" in the Unction scene in Volume 1, Book 1 of War and Peace. (1713-68) had a marked influence on the young Tolstoy, particularly with his Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy(1768), which stands behind Tolstoy's first piece of fiction, 'A History of Yesterday' (1851), and part of which Tolstoy translated. Pevear/Volokhonsky's War and Peace transformed the book, which I had read several times before in the Maude translation. Using several examples from Tolstoy's War and Peace, the author gives the reader a whole new look and appreciation into the world of a translator. For the first time, I understood Andre -- he'd seemed like such a prig before. Two different translations can feel like two entirely different books. As I've mentioned elsewhere, I opted to use the Richard Pevear/Larissa Volokhonsky translation of War and Peace for numerous reasons. War and Peace Translated by Richard Pevear & Larissa Volokhonsky It's hard to overstate the case for this translation as being essential. [3] War and Peace (Pevear/Volokhonsky, Knopf). It is also hard to avoid hyperbole in its praise. Of course, for Russian lit I go straight for Pevear & Volokhonsky! This translation is ideal because it sticks as closely to the text as possible. I highly recommend the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation.
